Since opening in 2002, the Carlton J. Kell School band program has quickly established a reputation for musical excellence. The three-tiered concert band program includes the Wind Symphony, the Symphonic Band, and the Concert Band. Since the opening of the school, the Kell band program has grown to over 200 students in grade 9-12.
Students in the Kell band program are consistently members in the GMEA District Honor Band, Gerogia All-State Band, Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, and the Georgia Govenor's Honors Program.
With the concert bands at the core of the music curriculum, students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurriculat ensembles. These include the 150-member marching band, full symphony orchestra, a pit orchestra for the spring musical, numerous chamber ensembles, two jazz bands, a percussion ensemble, and a nationally renowned "Stomp" Ensemble. The Kell Band Booster Association (KBBA) sponsors an after-school provate lesson conservatory with an outstanding faculty of professional musicians.
In Cobb County, students begin band in sixth grade. Those attending Kell High School attend either McCleskey Middle School or Palmer Middle School. Between these two middle schools there are over 400 students currently enrolled in the band programs. The "Kell cluster" is symbolized by a respectful partnership between all the directors and embodies a seven-year comprehensive musical philosophy focused intently on developing strong musical fundamentals in our students. The middle school and high school in our cluster work together to give our students the most consistent and educational musical experience possible.
